9 days in Sri Lanka

What is your longest journey? So far I haven’t believed that I could travel a that long journey. Having just 9 days in this country, I gathered everything read up on travel blogs about this land and came up with this itinerary.

itinerary

Colombo – Kandy – Ella – Matara (Mirissa) – Galle – Tangalle – Colombo

Sri Lanka appears to be like a green country that is full of highlands and trees. This is the place that you can easily travel from city to city by a tremendous train network connecting most small towns. Sri Lanka brings to travelers a new experience about train hoping and planning a set of routes. There is an enormous number of creative ways to setting up an itinerary since you can choose combinations of cities that you want to visit and connect them by the transport they offer such as trains, buses, taxis, tuktuks.

Every city acquires a reputation of its own unique beauty. While Kandy which is known as the Heart of Sri Lanka, possesses an antique sacred, Ella whose name sounds like a princess, wears a gorgeous and splendid dress. Matara which is a huge busy city, owns one of the most picturesque and prominent beaches in the country; Mirissa. Time flies and Galle Fort is still standing there to be a witness of Sri Lanka’s history.

I genuinely love Ella. I love every morning waking up early and having breakfast at a wooden table on a balcony. I could find myself enjoying picturesque views of this small town which are a blend of all natural elements such as forest, springs, waterfalls, rivers and wildlife.

There are tons of viewpoints that you can go to by a tuktuk or even on foot. One of them is Little Adam’s Peak. Standing on the peak I could feel the breeze, and as I was looking from faraway, I was thinking that we were so small to the world and that was not the only peak in the area. The very impression about Ella is the scenic viewpoint beholded from the highland downward Nine-Arch Bridge. I promise you that you could be unconsciouly sitting up there for hours just looking at the scenery and if you’re lucky, you can even see a train running through the pass and hear the addictive noise of it.

A shuttle bus from Ella took me to Mirissa beach which is situated in busy Matara city. Mirissa can be called the worthest place to be found by global backpackers coming to Sri Lanka. The beach is pristine but a little bit busy.

From Sri Lanka, I rent a motorbike to ride along the beach to visit Tangalle and Galle. While Tangalle is famous for tranquil beaches, Galle is a historical fortified city that used to be under colonization of Portugese and Dutch. The wall is very long and suitable for anyone interested in having a stroll.
